Adhesives International Ltd was founded in 1979 to undertake the marketing and
distribution of hot melt adhesives principally to the packaging industry.
After a period of rapid expansion the company opened its first production facility in the
mid 1980s which added a number of water based packaging adhesives to the range.
The company then further increased its product range to include adhesives for the
automotive and furniture industries.
During this period an agreement was reached with a German company Forbo-Helmitin to
distribute their products in the UK and to provide technical support. This greatly
increased the scope of the business, providing one of the largest ranges of specialist
adhesive products in the UK.
A new headquarters building including production, warehousing and technical departments
was opened at the end of 1991 near Witney in Oxfordshire. These facilities laid the
foundation for further expansion in the range of products manufactured, designed and
developed within the company.
Further capital investment has been made in recent years to increase production capacity,
to enable increased levels of the adhesive products sold by the company to be produced
on-site.
The company also supplies a wide range of application equipment to enable complete systems
to be provided to customers. Technical co-operation with a number of specialist
engineering companies enables fully automated and robotic systems to be provided
During the past 20 years we have seen a transformation in the composition and nature of
adhesive products to a large extent due to environmental and health and safety
considerations. During the early 1980's approximately 40% of our adhesives were
solvent-based compared to less than 5% of the total today.
Our business today is almost entirely based on hot melts, aqueous and reactive solvent
free adhesives.
Work is now in hand to minimise packaging waste and to re-use bulk containers wherever
possible, not always an easy task where products adhere strongly to most packaging
materials.
There are many exciting developments which will come to fruition early in the next
millennium notably Biopolymers which show great potential in the adhesives field. These
materials will if successful in this role remove our almost complete dependence on
products derived from hydrocarbons and provide for the first time a completely renewable
resource for the basis of our production.
